“Who is This?” – A King on a Donkey

Preacher:
Passage: Matthew 21:1-17
Service Type:

Introduction

  • Looking at a Psalm Sunday passage
  • Who is this?
    • A prophet, a priest, a king?
  • It may seem strange to use
    • We expect pomp and ceremony
    • Jesus worse ordinary clothes and rode a baby donkey
    • He was surrounded by His disciples and ordinary people
  • Was it an incongruous scene?
    • Only if you have a warrior view of Jesus coming
    • Jesus spoke about being lowly, He was meek
    • There was majesty and there was meekness
  • v10 – "who is this?"
    • Now He did public healing
  • Let us consider

A Prophet

  • "The prophet from Nazareth of Galilee" (v11)
    • He had an authority that the chief priests and pharisees did not have
      • Mark 11:18
    • Prophets spoke the word of God
      • Heb 1 – Jesus is the final word
    • Prophets could foretell events
      • Jesus direct His disciples about the donkey/colt
      • Jesus knew of the Zechariah 9:9 prophecy, given 520 years before His birth
      • Jesus was God and man – a great mystery
      • Not like an ordinary prophet
      • Jesus could discern the thoughts and heart of mankind
  • The Prophet of God
    • Deut 18:15
    • Jesus was coming into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover
      • He would become the Passover Lamb
    • He had not come to save the Jewish people from the Romans
      • He had come to save people from a worse enemy – sin
      • He went to the cross to take the sin of His people
    • He is the final word of God
      • Not just His ministry but His person
      • He is the divine "Logos" (word of God)
      • Have you heard Jesus speaking to you?

A King

  • v5 – the Jews were expecting a King
    • Example – He came in an unexpected way
    • There was something glorious
      • Spontaneous praise
      • They seemed to understand this man was the Messiah – the Son of David
      • They probably did not understand what they were saying – "Hosanna" (v9)
    • Many of the things in Jesus’ life were borrowed – examples
      • A new donkey
    • He is receiving praise
    • The children were worshipping Him (v16)
    • He was likening Himself to Jehovah – it was blasphemous to praise any man
  • Not just a King, but the King of Kings
    • Have you come to worship Him today?
    • Does your life honour Him?
    • Are you living truly for Jesus?
    • Are you fickle?
  • Not just the King of the Jews but King of the Nations
    • Jerusalem rejected Him
      • Luke 19:42
    • You must freely come to Jesus

A Priest

  • He sees the corruption of the Temple – examples
    • He has righteous anger
    • He has zeal for the honour of His Father (v13)
  • He is the High Priest of God who has come to cleanse the Temple – not like Ezra or other previous priests
    • He is saying the Temple is to be a house of prayer for all nations
    • He is saying the Temple sacrifices will end
    • Mal 3:1-3 – Jesus will refine
    • People must worship in spirit and truth
  • He is the High Priest bringing grace
    • He heals people (v14)
      • Isa 35:5-6
    • He is a willing sacrifice
      • Gen 49:11
    • There is meekness and majesty

Closing Remarks

  • No person was ever prophet, priest and king
    • Jesus has all three offices
  • Is Jesus your Lord?
    • Has He died for you?
  • Today is a day of grace
    • But there will be a day of judgment (Rev 19:11-15)
      • The first entrance in meekness on a donkey
      • The second coming as a warrior of judgment
  • Today is the day of salvation
    • Seek God in prayer
    • Rest in Jesus Christ
