Introduction

  • Overview:
    • Tells us about God
    • Tells us about the Saviour
    • Tells us about 2 ways to live
  • Psalm 1 is about life

God

  1. Only one God
    • This is what the Scripture teaches – Ps 91, 93
  2. God the Creator
    • A reminder of the Garden of Eden
    • Example of the Universe – 20% matter
  3. The Covenant Lord/God
    • v2,6 – Yahweh
    • A personal God
    • Isa 57 – God condescends to His people
  4. God rules over the nations
    • God watches over the righteous and the wicked
    • Part of His Omnipresence
    • Ps 2
  • Psalms written to help us praise
  • Psalms written to help instruct us
    • Who God is
    • To teach the nations who God is
    • To teach people to commit to the one true God

The Saviour

  • A blessed man
    • v1-3
    • Example of the tree planted by the river in Erddig Hall & Gardens in Wrexham
  • Not so much a description of what we should be but a portrait of someone
    • A man much greater than any king, than any person
    • The Lord Jesus Christ – both God and man
      • He always did the will of God
      • He is the perfect Saviour for the nations of the world
  • What is a Saviour?
    • Example of lifeboat
    • Ps 1 teaches us that Jesus it the perfect Saviour for you and me
      • He died for our sins
      • He rose again from the dead
      • When we trust in Him – His perfect life is accounted to us
        • As if we had never been wicked
      • When we trust in Jesus – all our sins are forgiven
  • Some have called Ps 1 – a gateway Psalm
    • Into the rest of the Psalms
    • The Psalms do not primarily teach us to how to have a better life
    • The Psalms teach us to trust in Jesus
  • We need to repent and put our trust in Jesus
    • Our filthy rags of sin – are removed
    • The righteousness of Jesus covers us

2 ways to live

  • Trust in the Saviour or reject the Saviour
  • Trust and follow the Saviour
    • They instruct the believer how to live
    • We find out desires have changed
      • We do not want to follow the ways of the world
      • We want to follow the ways of the Saviour
    • We delight in God’s law and meditate upon it
      • "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness"
      • Such a person is like a strong tree producing good fruit
      • Example of the film ‘The pursuit of happiness’
      • We trust in true happiness
      • Spiritual prosperity that comes through righteousness
    • Are you seeking these things?
  • Reject the Saviour and ignore His ways
    • The wicked
      • Not walking but standing or sitting
      • Like the chaff – explanation
      • To invest only in this life – is to lose your soul (v5)
        • Such will not stand in the judgment
  • An invitation to stand with the righteous
    • Which way are you living?
